McCoy

McCoy, first name unknown, if indeed this is his actual name, comes originally so he claims from the world known as Earth.

Very little is known about this mysterious man's past or indeed his overall motives for travelling the shards world save that he tends to travel with a group calling themselves the Brotherhood of the End Times. He claims not to be their leader, more their "spiritual shepherd and compass" but each member of the Brotherhood seems very dedicated to him and the cause he serves. The group themselves, who are seen as more of a cult by outsiders, are made up of social misfits and malcontents who shun the trappings of society and seek to live a "free" life. Each member of the Brotherhood also seems to be possessed of a dissatisfaction for life in general and seem to all suffer from various events in their pasts that they would rather forget or escape. This, they say, is how and when McCoy found them; when they were each at their most vulnerable or contemplative of ending their lives somehow, he came to them and offered them each "another way."

The various tales that the Brotherhood have been told around the campfire have led to some sparse accounts from McCoy about his times spent wandering Earth and the shards world and they are somewhat dark and violent tales at that.

What is known is that McCoy was forced to flee from his home in a country called Great Britain after his wife and daughter were found dead. His wife's father was an influential man and dedicated his life to exacting vengeance on his former son-in-law. McCoy travelled across Earth while on the run and consulted with many spiritualists and above all shamans of the various cultures and lands he came across, as if he was constantly searching for an answer to a question he did not know. He eventually journeyed to a place called the New World and stayed there for a time. It is evident both from his sparse accounts and from the various wounds decorating his torso that his time there was a violent and troubled one, citing civil wars and dark times.

At some point during his tenure in the New World, McCoy claims to have gone on a vision quest, a perilous one that saw him "die" only to have his soul collected by something ancient and powerful. It was at this point, he says, that he was chosen for his current role. Upon his apparent resurrection he found he had been gifted with a strange grimoire which he called the Book of Bones. McCoy states that within the Book lies the key to every soul's final salvation, but much more than that he does not say. If any of his closest followers do indeed know any more details than this, they appear loathe to discuss it with those they view as outsiders to their group.

The things that are most evident about McCoy is that he is a well-schooled shaman and seems to hold the spirit worlds in a much higher regard than material reality. Though he preaches no kind of spiritual or religious doctrine of any kind, he does espouse his own views on what reality and existence are, but even then he urges each person to seek their own ways and their own "truths". He seems to hold a special disgust for organised religion as a whole, especially those he views as "imposing" themselves upon others. Not precisely a nihilist per se, McCoy does profess a distaste for organised society and tries to encourage all, where he can, to "live freely".

The Brotherhood and indeed McCoy do, for all their preaching of freedom and happiness outside of strictures and boundaries, have an obvious darker side with their seeming fixation upon and fascination with death and pain. When called upon to fight, most members of the Brotherhood engage in violence with enthusiastic abandon, all the time watched and encouraged by McCoy himself.

Who the Brotherhood and McCoy really are, and whom or what they really serve are yet to be fully discovered.
